A Comprehensive Guide to the Operation, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting of Silicon Carbide Rods

2026-04-22

Failures of silicon-carbide rods are often caused by improper operation and maintenance. This article, compiled by the technical team at Zhengzhou Runda, covers common faults, their root causes, and corresponding troubleshooting methods.

I. Key Points for Daily Maintenance

1. Regular inspections

◦ Cold-end fixture: Check for looseness, oxidation, and arcing marks.

◦ Rod body: Check for cracks, deformation, and localized overheating.

◦ Insulation: Porcelain components and wire insulation are in good condition.

2. Cold-end processing
When the aluminum coating deteriorates and flakes off, remove the damaged area and reapply aluminum spray or wrap with aluminum foil to reduce contact resistance.

II. Common Faults and Troubleshooting

1. Broken stick (most common)

• Causes: Over-tight installation, undersized furnace openings, inrush current, mechanical vibration, and rapid heating and cooling.

• Handling: Replace components with the same impedance; ream holes, loosen fill material, and standardize temperature ramping.

2. Local redness/through-burn

• Causes: excessive surface load, uneven temperature, poor contact leading to arcing

• Troubleshooting: Reduce power; inspect wiring; reconfigure the group.

3. Slow heating and inability to reach the set power

• Cause: Severe aging, insufficient voltage, incorrect wiring

• Troubleshooting: Measure resistance; check power supply and wiring.

4. Overheating and red-hot cold end

• Causes: fixture loosening, high contact resistance, and an excessively short cold end

• Treatment: tighten the fixture; extend the cold end; enhance heat dissipation

III. Key to Extended Lifespan

• Stable temperature control to prevent overheating

• Keep the furnace dry and clean

• Regular maintenance and timely resolution of potential hazards
